It's a corn snake and I have a lot of trouble sleeping with its extremely bright heat lamp on. It would only be for like 5-6 hours.

Of course you can. No need for you to miss sleep over the heat lamp. As long as your Corn snake has about 3-4 hours of light during the day he/she should be fine. No need for its light to be on all day. And to be totally honest most snakes are more active at night. So in the wild they get little sunlight.

what you can buy in order to sleep well at night and not worry about your snake being cold, is an under tank heater. You place this on one side of the tank (usually the side his/her hide box and water IS NOT ON) and the snakes now has the option of keeping warm at night. Hope I helped

Sweet dreams!

A cornsnake can go with a night-time temperature drop of 10 degrees. So, if your room doesn't go below 65 degrees at night, then you don't need to keep that lamp on. As a matter of fact, the cornsnake will appreciate a "night-time" period with the lights off as well. But, if the temperature gets too cold in your room or if the snake is close to a window, you will need to keep a temperature gradient. If so, then you need to check out this thing called NightGlo lightbulb. You can take out the current bulb at night and replace with the NightGlo. It is like moon-light - soft bluish light. It's soothing, so you should be able to sleep with it on. Then you can replace it with the day bulb in the morning. Or, you can just get another heat lamp dome and put both lamps on a timer for day and night cycles. Or, you can get an undertank heat mat and turn off the heat lamp at night.

For the most part, a snake should have a temperature variance from day to night. What kind of snake is it?

I suggest getting a thermometer in the cage and see how cold it gets in there at night with no heat. If the temperature doesn't drop below 60-65 degrees, it should be fine.

However, this does depend on the snake. Try looking up temperatures for your specific snake's needs. :] Good luck!

What sort of snake is it?

Depending on your answer, you probably should be doing this anyway. Many reptiles need a daytime/night time temperature variation to be healthy.

If you want to automate the process, you can obtain a simple plugin-timer at any home depot or garden-related store for around $5.

If your room is cold at night, get a red bulb to provide your snake proper nite time temperatures. If your room at night is warm enough to provide the right cage temperature for your snake, you can turn the lamp off.
