I got a 4 foot long bull snake roaming around my farm, and i'm afraid it's going to get into my chickens. My brother saw it today for the first time. I'm sure i know where its living. There is several holes inside my shed, that has a dirt floor . They tunnel under the concrete floor. I have filled the holes but the next morning there open again. If i can find it out, i'll kill it, but if i cant find it how do i get it to leave. I also have cows and goats around, so there is lots of hay and feed for mice. I cant keep all the mice gone with d-con. So open to any ideas

A 4 foot long Bull snake cannot eat a chicken. Bull snakes have a diet of mainly rodents, so the snake is actually being helpful of controlling your rodent population around your farm. The snake will not leave since there is plenty for it to eat at the farm, and the snake is being helpful because it is killing the rodents. This snake cannot take down any chicken because chickens are far too large for a 4 foot snake to take down and the Bull snake does not prey on chickens. The snakes that do eat chickens are the large snakes such as Burmese pythons, Reticulated pythons, Rock pythons, and Anacondas. Pretty much any large snake like the snakes I listed can swallow chickens, but these snakes do not live in the United States so they cannot eat anyone's chickens.

If you find out which hole the snake is burrowed in and you are willing to kill it. there is a such thing as poison gas for pests. My Grandfather used to use it on ground hogs. All you do is throw the poison in the whole and it will form smoke suffocating the snake. That will solve the snake problem.

I noticed that someone else said to buy a cat. Don't, it will most likely get your chicken if it didn't grow up around them. The biggest priority is the mice though. They are what the snake is after. Set up as many traps as possible, and please check out this site for more help, it gave me a lot of information.

There are no toxins, fumigants, or other poisons registered to kill snakes.

Also, I wouldn't recommend killing it. If it is there because there is easy food, such as your chickens or mice in your barn, you will just have this problem again and again.

Your best bet would be to try to eliminate what is attracting it. Either try to rid your barn of rodents or put 1 meter high metal flashing or cloth around your chicken yard. If the material is smooth and seamless the snake cannot climb it and get to your chickens.

The mice and probably other rodents are the main problem and reason that the snake(s) is there. Truthfully why kill it, it is doing you a favor ? I was raised in the country and we and other family kept horses, chickens, rabbits, and various live stock. Only once did we loose a few young rabbits to a black rat snake.

I lived on a farm and even though snakes do not eat chickens it won't stop them from killing them. I went to check on my chickens after they had all gone to bed and found a bull snake raped around its throat.

There are chemicals available to kill it, some are like smoke bombs, some are powders, and others are like baits. I dont have bull snakes, so I dont know how they work, but repels all got rid of a rattler, and some garters from our shed. Thing is if you have that much space it will be tricky. trap it, or bait it and kill it if you arent too humanitarian about it ( i would) I imagine a large rodent trap would get it, like a one way cage trap with something in it, alive, and injured. then check the trap, and if it is in there, or stuck in there, you could pike it, or chop it. or shoot it, and it will be gone. its all about your weapon of choice...

Good question - I think the first thing I would do would be to find someplace that sells snakes and see if the proprietor has any suggestions.

don't kill it. Catch it under a wet burlap bag and toss it in the woods.
