I am interested in getting a lizard, and i was wondering what would be the best pet lizard that is active during the day! I would like a desert type but i am open to suggestions, but i am NOT interested in a bearded dragon!

I recently purchased two lizards. I got a Panther Gecko and an Iguana. When I purchased the Gecko the lovely lady at the counter did not inform me that they don't like to be handled. My iguana on the other hand is very affectionate and an amazing pet but he requires handling everyday. If you go with an iguana make sure you're ready to try different foods. They love fruit and eat well when they find something they like and get adjusted to their new home. I would also recommend that you get a baby because they are more likely to quickly adjust to being handled.
Whatever you decide make sure that you're ready for the commitment. And make sure that if you want PET and not just a pretty thing to look at that you can dedicate time to letting the lizard become accustomed to you

I got a Blue Tongue Skink several years ago and I am so happy with this pet! I did alot of research to see what kind of lizard to get at the time. Bluetongueskinks.net is a great place to learn EVERYTHING YOU NEED TO KNOW about these wonderful and intelligent lizards. They have a forum as well where there is an active community of people who all have bluey's as pets themselves and they are very helpful with any questions you may have. They also post tons of pic's of their bluey's. Very cool. Check it out if your serious about keeping a long term pet. Blue Tongue's can live 20 years or more.

If you are willing to put the time and money into it the mali euromastix is a great lizard. Desert lizard awake during the day. Very docile and easily tamed. Very active as far as lizards go. There is alot of consideration though. Best to have at least a four foot tank as they like to burrow 2 hides and enough lights to keep the high side about 120 and the low side about 85. I suggest you develop a price range as alot of lizards can get expensive if cared for properly. Then decide your lizard you'd like and research that kind. Once you feel comfortable with your choice setup his habitat make sure its functional then go pick up your new baby. If you have any questions or need help researching what you might like you can contact me at http://exoticrescues.yolasite.com I would be more than happy to help you out. One thing to remember is the salesmen at pet stores are just that....salesmen. They are there to push a product out so its always best to go with other resources when picking your lizard.

i would recommend a leopard gecko or a bearded dragon but i suggest you do your research and see what is beast to suit you and your lifestyle as most lizards require a lot of care a leopard gecko is quite easy and inexpensive as they do-not need any special lighting just heat and 1 leopard gecko can live in a 10 gallon vivarium with a incandescent bulb for heat and they are not too bothered about being handled but are very boring and do-not do much but you can truly bond with a bearded dragon and it will pay a great amount of attention to you and they absolutely love to be handled but also need a bit bore care than leopard geckos and are a bit more costly another good suggestion is a anole or a skink they are both a good pet but anoles dont like to be handled much but i dont know much about skinks so sorry but still recommend a bearded dragon hope it helps :)

Unfortunately most good beginner lizards, other than beardies, are nocturnal. Leopard geckos are a great starter species and while they are nocturnal they can deal with some daytime handling. They can be a bit skittish as babies but almost all mellow out great.
Uromastyx are not beginner lizards! I own a pair of malis. They require a varied diet, extensive heating and lighting, and get large and strong. They are also fragile as babies. I love my malis but only they are not for the first time handler, despite their awesome temperaments.

Leopard Geckos are slow moving, but they can be fun to play with and they're pretty to look at. They mealworms and sometimes crickets and they'll walk around in your hand. Plus, they're soft!
Hope this helped.
