Snakes don't "yawn" per se. Most often they will do it to reset their jaws. You'll almost always see them do it after feeding, but I've seen it before and after shedding, and sometimes for no discernable reason. If the snake is doing this often and appears to have trouble breathing, then it's possible it has a respiratory infection which will require a trip to the vet. If the snake is open mouthed and coming at you, it can be an aggressive behavior, but the only time I've ever seen it is during feeding. The snake will pursue the prey on tongs with mouth open until it grabs it.

I'm a little confused due to the wording but I'll do my best at answering what I think you're asking.

I've had quite a few snakes. Snakes yawn. I find mine yawn the most right after eating or after taking a drink. Those aren't the only times, but the most likely time if you're trying to 'catch' them yawning. :) Make certain the mouth isn't open even partially on a regular basis or excessive yawning. These could be symptoms of mouth rot.

What kind of snake is it? If it's a ball python then I wouldn't worry about the head thing. Ball pythons do not like to be touched on the head. My one male occasionally will let me stroke the top of his head if he's in a good mood. Most snakes (regardless of species) don't like it. They may tolerate it, like yours.

If she reeled back it was either because she didn't like it or you startled her. I would refrain from touching her head and see if this 'mood' goes away. Also ALWAYS make sure your snake knows you are there. Before picking up my snakes I always touch their midsection gently. They learn that it is a signal of who it is ('cause I'm the only one in the house that holds them). If they are startled their automatic reaction is 'It's a predator!' That's how they're programmed. Remember: Snakes are defensive creatures. They'd rather flee than bite. If you feel she is showing signs of agitation, don't touch her head.

I currently own a five foot Honduran milk snake, an eight foot male boa c. constrictor and a twelve foot female boa c. constrictor as well as a slew of other reptiles and mammals. Snakes 'yawn' to replace their jaws. When they feed they will 'yawn' to reset their jaws after unhinging them. My boas and milk snake will 'yawn' on occasion. "yawning' is just something snakes do, it doesn't mean they will shed soon or that they have just eaten, it just means they are moving their jaws around, just like you do when you stretch in the morning.

I have a male Ball Python, and i guess i over sprayed his terrarium, and get a weird bump on his head.. he was so.. poor baby.. he looked like he was gunna die or something, usually when my boy yawns he always seems happy very active and he yawns at me after i spray his cage, feed him, hold him, or give him a bath, not everytime but yknow what i mean.. when he got the bump on his head.. he stopped yawning... he just layed around.. then i picked him up today and hes been laying on my chest the whole time ive been typing this and he yawned. i like to think my little guy is a bit psychic.

the first guy is probably right, they stretch their jaws that was. You will see them do this after they eat too, it helps them realign their jaw. as for the smelling, that is what their tongue does and it has to go back into the sheath to get the particles to the organ (forgot the name of the organ). The yawning is a stretching thing, maybe the shedding thing too.

Don't snakes sniff the air that way? I don't have one but I seem to remember that from National Geo and Discovery channel over the years/
