I have a snakeskin and want to know if its from a red-bellied black or an Eastern brown. The scales are very dark, so I thought it was a R/B Black snake, but the belly scales have no tinge of colour at all. Does a Red-Bellied Black snake have a shed skin that has some of hte red pigment in it ? Could it be from an Eastern brown if it is very dark ? I know we have both species here and am a little concerned as it was found right by the house. I'm terrified of snakes - would never hurt one - but like to know what's out there. We live on acreage so snakes are usually seen in or near the creek, or in the scrubby areas. It appears as though this snake has been living under our patio. Any info would be appreciated. Thanks.

if i were you i would call a herp society, they could tell you.

there are several things you can find out about a snake with its shed left behind.

some snakes have smooth scales and some have raised scales. the shed you have is going to be inside out.

you can also tell if the snake was venomous or NON venomous...if its venomous, toward the end of the shed by the tail it will have single row of scales going to the end

if non venomous there will be double scales going to the tail

If you have a local nature center or agricultural extension...or a state museum handy, they often can field such questions, or identify the skin if you bring it or send it in.

It's probably a cotton mouth.
