Hello, I am an owner of multiple burmese pythons. I also have a friend who owns multiple reticulated pythons & I was wondering if it is possible for a Burmese python to mate with a reticulated python and if so what are the qualifications (Size of snake etc)??

I would appreciate only recieveing answers that are useful to me.
Thanks!

You do not have the experience or knowledge to properly breed any snakes, let alone giants. Azure Child gave you some great advice, I suggest you read it multiple times and let it sink in.

For those of us that own and adore the big snakes we cringe every time we read or hear something like this. If you were ready to take on the responsibility of breeding you would already know the answers to your questions, you would be doing your research far far away from Y!A, you would not be keeping your burms in the same enclosure, one of your snakes would not have severe nose-rub, your enclosures would be set up correctly so as to prevent self-injury, you would know to feed in-enclosure and not have to aske such a newbie question, etc etc etc. I remember burm questions like I do monitor ones, and the people who ask them.

If you want a bateater go buy one, do not attempt breeding at this point. You are a new reptile keeper that jumped right in to intermediate and expert species (burms, redtails and a sav). You need to keep your animals alive and healthy for a few years while investing literally hundreds of hours into research prior to even thinking of breeding projects.

The reptile industry/hobby is under a microscope, the big guys are the target of banning/restricting legislation due to irresponsible keepers and breeders. Do not add to the problem.

Fertility rate is rather low, and do so would require a specific size of both Reticulated and Burmese. The hybrid is called the "Borneo Bateater". They are, like any burm/retic are an advanced keeper species only. They get quite large, somewhere between a burm and a retic, but are more heavy (+retic ).

If you want a Bateater, buy one. There's no need to bring into the market any more large snakes, especially when you seem to know so little about them. Any little snot will buy the babies from you and thus you will contribute to the large issue of snakes being tossed out as soon as they go past the six feet.

I agree with the poster that states "its amazing what some people think". There are too many misconceptions with pythons and boids. First i have never heard of anyone sleeping with a snake. This is absurd. A large python is capable of killing a human and eating them depending on the size of both the snake and the human. It is unsafe to keep a large snake out while you are sleeping or at any time that you cant keep a watchful eye on it.If you cant provide the proper environment to house your reptile you should not have one. I think people that house their reptiles irresponsibly is one of the reason we have pending legislation to ban the interstate trade of boas and pythons. I also don't think that a vet would request that a snake be put down because it may eat someone. If he did request this then he should not be in his chosen field. I think this is just another urban myth that will hurt the reputation of the wonderful creatures.

Sorry, but the Burmese and Reticulated pythons can not mate, although their offspring would look amazing, they can't mate because, being separate species, they have built up special immunities in their bodies not allowing them to mate with certain species. Hope this helps!
