I'm trying to solve a dispute with someone on what species of Boa Constrictor my Mother's new snake is, AND i would just like to know the different species. What are the other Boa Costrictor subspecies out there and how can one identify them? I know the RedTail Boa (by the red marks on it's tail), the Argentine Boa (by it's dark, and sometimes black, all-over coloration) and the Hogg Island Boa (for it's the smallest in the family and it has faded/faint markings and a tan-brownish coloration).

Note- I am talking specifically of members in the Boa Constrictor subfamily, not the overall Boa/Boidae family.

There are 9 accepted subspecies. Most of these subspecies are distinguished largely by their range rather than appearance, but regional (locality) variation in form, size, and coloration does occur. Generally BCC have peaks in the saddles and brighter red/ maroon tail color, BCI usually have orangish to brick red tail color. But, saddle shapes and tail color is not a definitive way to tell, scale counts are if its not a subspecies mix. With several locales that produce various size, color and pattern variations that for most it is impossible to tell the difference. This is complicated by subspecies overlapping in geographic areas, and cross breeding in captivity and possible natural intergrades, and even subspecies having overlapping scale counts.

Boa Constrictor Imperator

Boa Constrictor Longicauda

Boa Constrictor Nebulosa

If you want something with size and hopefully wouldnt pass the 6 foot mark in length, look at the male of the species. The average male red tail wouldnt get much more than 6 feet. The female however could potentially be a different story. Also make sure its a columbian, not a suriname or guyanan. The males in those species would certianly pass the 6 foot mark. A male Dumeril's is a fairly compact snake with great attitude. Wouldnt most likely even hit 5 feet. My last suggestion would be a Hog (Hogg) Island Boa. Both male and female will stay below 6 foot easily. There could be a compromise, however. Red Tails and Hogg Island boas are being crossbred. (I dont agree with this, but hey Im not the one doing it) So the snake would have alittle more size, but still most likely stay below 6 feet.
