I caught it on a golf course in California. It was about a foot and a quarter long and was black with a white stripe down its back. It bit me but had no teeth. Does anyone know what kind it was?

It sounds like a young Garter. They do have teeth but are small and serated, since they are constrictors and eat slugs and frogs and fish. Being young, it's teeth would be small. There are dozens of species of Garters in the US, several in California. That's the only kind I know that fit that description, but there may be something else, or it could be an escaped pet.
Head shape is more important for determining type, but since you were on a Golf Course, not near a house I presume, I would guess Garter.

Jesus, these people are idiots! It was not a California kingsnake, they have BANDS, not STRIPES. If the stripe was running down its back lengthwise, it was most likely a garter snake or ribbon snake. Every snake found in CA is not a Cali King.

California King snake that is if they were stripes going across or up and down. Across is a king snake and they are harmless but a garter snake would be up and down striped..
Please put it back where you caught it. Go to kingsnake.com to buy your own, captive bred that will bond with you and get used to your handling better than the wild caught ever will...
