Ball Pythons are awesome. I've been working with snakes all summer but Ball Pythons are by far my favorite and I just got one of my own last week. Bought his tank and everything for under 200 bucks and it was well worth it. If you're really set on getting a lizard though, I personally like bearded dragons. Either way, just make sure that you do your homework and know what you're getting yourself into. Good luck!

Since you said mom doesn't want mice or rats in the freezer, you pretty much just knocked out all the monitor species of lizards. They really aren't for beginners. They need to eat mice and rats for good health. However if you have your heart set on a montior I would try to get a peach throat, a yellow monitor, a black tree monitor, mangrove, dwarf monitor. Nile, water and savs all get AT LEAST 6 feet long. And need a bigger than 60 gallon tank. The others I listed grow to be around 5 at the most and could do okay in a 60 gallon (they are mostly tail) PLease do as much research on whatever species you are thinking about before hand so you are prepared. Also look into vets in the area to find out where to take it if something goes wrong. Monitors are very expensive (not to say some others aren't) and you want to make sure that you take care of your investment. I would say a blue tongue skink, but the vet told me to fed it hoppers to beat a vitamin deficency. Bearded dragons are a great starter lizard and if you google them there are several very good websites to get information on them. Others you can think of would be uromastyx, leopard lizards (not gecko), spiny crevace lizards, collared lizards, yellow throated plated lizard, sudan plated lizard, giant plated lizard, other skinks. I wouldn't go with any chameleons, they do not like being handled and handling them can actually stress them to death. I assume from the way you are talking you don't want a "show pet". Hope I could clear things up from you a little bit.

ok a snake and a lizard their both good but i will give u some good types or snake and lizards

a snake a king or corn snake make a great pet butt if u cant feed it mice then i would recommend a rough green snake or smooth snake(their pretty much the same) they will not bite and eats insects they are small and very beautiful do some research and pick

for lizards i like leopard geckos butt because u said a big lizard i would get a bearded dragon they are social and loves being handle and will do great in a 60 gallon tank butt i would first put it in the 30 gallon tank until it grows up

good luck!

I own both snakes and lizards and find snakes easier to keep. They're much hardier and less maintance than the lizards. Corn snakes are ideal for a first time owner as they are tame, come in a variety of colours and relatively easy to keep.

This question has to do a lot with your own personal taste. Research both BEGINNER snake and lizard species. Research as much as you can, books, reptile forums and breeder sites are your friends.

Take notice of the care skill that is required for each species and make sure you are able to meet all of the housing and care requirements for your pet. You have to be prepared to provide heat, a good enclosure (Not just some tank with a log and a sheet of newspaper, I'm actually apalled by how many people keep their pets in a crittercarrier with some paper and a log from the backyard.) food, time and all those nitpicky needs reptiles have. Be also ready to spend money.

Snakes: Since boas and pythons are illegal for you, A Kingsnake or Cornsnake is the way to go. Good thinking.

Lizards: I would say a Leopard Gecko, but you've alredy stated that you want something bigger. I've owned lizards in the past (not right now, I focus on pythons.) and I have to say my favorites for beginners are the Bearded Dragon and the Blue Tongue Skink. Personally, I like skinks more.

I wouldn't recommend starting out with a monitor, especially a Nile, Water, Salvador or any 'giant' monitor. From what I've seen, monnitors get big, they need a lot of space and specialized space and they tend to be nippy and aggresive sometimes.

In other words, research like crazy and calculate your options carefully.

In my opinion snakes are the easier to keep of the two, and they are just beautiful fascinating creatures. Especially the corn with so many variaties, if you cant find one you like your doing well! hehe

As for the frozen rodents, wrap them up with newspaper and stick them in a container in the freezer so noone has to see them.

In the end it all comes down to what you animal you enjoy more!

Good luck!

I have two lizards both are Bearded Dragons and taking care of them is like having a dog or cat. They need to eat everyday and they also have to have baths to help with shedding. If you go with lizards be for warned they eat mice too but only alive mice so you can go with froze mice and a snake or alive and a big lizard its your choice. But i love my lizards i wouldn't trade them for 10 snakes.

Wow that sucks that pythons and boas are illegal. they make great pets! I have had an iguana in the past but they need more then a tank to survive. They need custom made homes big enough to have lots of lounging room. because they get huge! Personally i would keep eaither of the snakes your intrested in, in the 60 gal instead of the 30 just so they have more room to strech (sorry i suck at spelling today) if you cant keep frozen mice in the freezer id buy freash ones just make sure you keep food in the tank for the mouse when you put it with the snake or it will start to chew on the snake. So anywho i would go with the snake!

Have fun!

Hello; I love both snakes and lizards and think that they both make excellent pets, so it is kind of hard for me to choose one over the other. Snakes are lower maintenance, but lizards are more animated. It is really more of a personal preference thing. :)

Hmm; given what you generally like in lizard (the monitor-type look, and a big but not too big size); have you considered a a Northern Blue Tongued Skink?

They are often referred to as the 'Cadillacs of the lizard world', and are very intelligent, docile, interesting, hardy as long as their care needs are met, can be housed in a 40-65 gallon tank, are almost dog-like pets, and can even be hand-fed by their owners because of how gentle they are. They are omnivores and eat a mixture of greens, meats (chicken, high-quality cat food, snails, sill/wax/butter worms, etc), and fruit. They are a tad on the expensive side, but their personalities more than make up for it. I'm a bit biased, but in my opinion you really can't ask for a better pet lizard. :)

Here is an incredibly detailed care sheet that is a wonderful resource on Blue-tongue Skink general information, care, needs, and maintenance:

I hope this helps, and if you have any further questions at all on the subject or would like more suggestions on a good lizard or snake species; please feel free to message me and I will be more than happy to assist you. :)

Good luck on your reptile search!

I think you should get a corn snake with a great personality! They are the best types of snakes and they have tons of different colors available on the market! I just got a 1 year old female snow corn snake and she is the best snake in the world! they also dont get too big so if you decide to breed it you dont have to worry about anything major. The problem with king snakes is that they are cannibles and will eat any type of snake with it of any size. That also can be a problem with breeding decisions.

some information and good breeders:

Personally I'd prefer a snake because I think they are beautiful creatures. As for the freezer problem you could buy yourself a mini freezer. That's what I'm going to do =]

which one interest you more I would go with that one. you would be a whole lot happier.

And you don't have to feed a snake frozen mice you could feed him life mice.
