My python is about 3 years old. I had fed him a medium rat yesterday and he ate it no problem. He has always been active and still is. The heat is about 85 degrees. I am not sure what to do. I have looked up the problem and many people say different things about it. I won't be able to goto a vet until next weekend becuase of work.

the heat may be a little to warm for him, and you really shouldn't pick up a snake at least 48 hrs after feeding

This could be several things. It could be

1) A respiratory infection - A couple of things to try. \with one hand, hold the snake behind the head while supporting the body on a table or use your arm to hold it against your body. With the other hand, gently pull the skin underneath the lower jaw to open the mouth of the snake. Look for the presence of bubbly mucus. Or. Gently press the throat area with your thumb while the snakes mouth is closed. If it has a respiratory infection, mucus will often come out of the sides of the mouth or through the nostrils.

Increase the heat a little but in most cases the snake will need antibiotics and will need to see a vet.

2)Infectious stomatitis (mouth rot)- Increase the heat, It requires gentle surgical removal of the loose tissue with benadine solution. You need to see a vet for this also.

3) An infected tooth - The tooth just needs pulled and cleaned with benadine solution however if you are not experienced enough to do this, the snake has to go to the vet

Whatever happens the snake will most likely need to see a vet.

Hope this helps.

Take him to a vet for a checkup to make sure there is no respiratory infection or stomatitis going on. Many vets offer drop off service, where you can drop your pet off in the morning and they can look at it during the day as they have time and you pick it up after work. As a general rule, you shouldn't handle your snake for a few days after eating. This upsets the digestive process and they will often regurgitate the eaten prey if handled or moved around too soon after eating....I suspect that the excess saliva was from that. Good luck!

Your snake is cold blooded. Therefore it can not sweat to cool down. 85 is kinda hot and if you hold it ,your 98.6 degree temp transfers to the snake raising its body temp. Drooling is a way of emergency cooling its self. Try a damp rag for it to rub against. and add shade.

If it recently ate, the drool could be the digestive fluids. If the snake is feeling threatened in any way, it may be trying to throw up the food so that he can escape a threat. After it eats it cant move as quickly.
