i dont know where they came from. i keep his habitat spotless. at pet quarters they had this spray that's supposed to help, but they are just getting worse. and they burrow under his scales and i feel so bad for him. where could they have come from? is this common?

EEW...That is not good. All reptiles have mites, it is just when they become sick that the little red mites breed out of control. First, make sure he is a roomy cage, being fed fesh greens and veggies, has a UV and a ceramic heat bulb. If that is correct, then you need a good vet. DO NOT USE OVER THE COUNTER MITE MEDS, they cause scale rott. Insted, find a good vet, that will give him some shots, it should be inexpensive. Please, take good car of him, or you will not have a little green pet anymore. I love iguanas, and they are worth the vet bills.

Good luck

Well first off,Mister "Reptile Expert" should be aware that not all reptiles have mites. wild caughts do but captive bred/captive born/bred reps mostly do not unless they came from an outside source (substrate for example). remove all items from the tank, thoroughly clean the tank out and spray with provent-o-mite anti-mite spray. let the tank air dry. also spray any fresh substrate and allow to dry before placing into the tank. while these items are drying, give your reptile a warm bath. i would not really advise on the use of a soap ...just some water to rinse off the mites. do not spray the iguana with provent-o-mite! there are sprays and such that can be purchaed that can be used directly on it. change the bedding out regularly, remove any uneaten food daily, change water daily, and thoroughly clean once every 7-10 days.

I would highly recommend taking to an exotic veterinarian and started on a treatment of ivermectin
