The best substrate, or what you put on the bottom of the enclosure, is linoleum tile. Or any other kind of flat, smooth surface. It's easy to clean and disinfect. Just take a pail with water in it, and a rag, wipe up the poop, rinse it out in the bucket, then flush it down the toilet. (Wear rubber gloves!) There's no chance that your ig will ingest it and become impacted like with bark or sand. Definately don't use cedar. It's an aromatic wood that gives off fumes that are toxic to all reptiles.

Most iguanas can be trained to use a "poopy box" such as a large plastic pan, or tupperware container with water in it. However, even the best trained igs will sometimes poop on the floor or even their shelf. So you want something that's easy to clean.

As for their shelves, especially the sleeping area, I use a towel. And a pillow! Mine love their pillows.

Newspaper works well. Plus, it's easy to clean the cage that way.
