Hey, I recently got a leopard gecko. He's about 10 months old and doing pretty well so far. In about a month, my family's going to New York to visit my older brother, and it's going to be about a 10 hour drive. I'd prefer to not leave my gecko at home because the only one who would be available to take care of him is my older step-brother who's been known to be forgetful. We'll be staying in a vacation house, so taking care of him once we get there shouldn't be hard. Should I take him with me? If so, what precautions should I take on the drive up and back a week later? Thank you.

I think the gecko would be way too stressed out. I'd rather leave alot of extra food in the tank. Get the smaller crickets they won't nip at your gecko and just put them in before you leave. Also get a mealworm container that won't let them get out and put alot in. They don't drink alot so just ask your step brother to please mist the walls of the tank everyday . That shouldn't be too hard for him to handle.

You can take your gecko. What you should do is get a small critter cage as a travel container. Just put some paper towels in the bottom, no food or water, and nothing that will slide around and hit him. Hold him in your lap or on the seat next to you to prevent him from sliding or bumping around. Empty the water out of his regular cage and put it in the car separately. It's not safe for him to travel in the big cage, things could spill or slide and he could get hurt. Make sure you set his cage up as soon as you get there so he can have food, water, and heat.

It's not uncommon for reptiles to get carsick and throw up a little- don't be concerned if yours does this too. To help prevent it, try not to feed him for 2 days before you leave for New York. That way he won't have anything in his belly to throw up.

Good luck! I'm sure your leo will enjoy the vacation too.

the way I relatively have discovered to transport my lizards is to place them in a plastic field in basic terms a sprint extra suitable than the reptile with various holes drilled interior the lids for air and line them with paper towels. you need to confirm you no longer feed it a minimum of 6 hrs previous to leaving. they do get motor vehicle ill. in case you intend on combating for a wile for a ruin from using supply it water in basic terms. additionally submit to in ideas they pick to stay heat so alter heater or AC to handle it. conserving it on the brink of the floor vent will supply adequate air flow interior the field. confirm you deliver extra paper towels for relining if desire be. i additionally agree a tumbler field or tank is only no longer risk-free for the two considered one of you & by no ability leave an animal in a motor vehicle without warmth or air counting on the temps and season
