I LOVE western hognose snakes and I just recently discovered the eastern hognose snake. I also know about puff adders but I have read that they are also called eastern hognose snakes??? So does that mean they are the same thing? Oh, and I know western hognose snakes aren't venomous so are eastern hognose snakes venomous? I'M SO CONFUSED!

They are not the same as puff adders. They are mildly venomous, but really only dangerous to toads. They are rear fanged (some rear fanged snakes are dangerous to humans) but nothing to worry about. The main purpose of their fangs is to "pop" toads when they puff up to be harder to swallow. Puff adders are from Africa and are related to gaboon and rhino vipers. They are extremely venomous front fang snakes

Hognose snakes are mildly venomous...pretty much on par with a bee sting. The problem is that people susceptible to anaphylactic reactions to bee stings would suffer similarly with envenomation by a hognose snake. The upside is that hognose are rear fanged, making envenomation unlikely. The webbing between the thumb and first finger and the tips of smaller fingers are likely places that a hognose could actually get you with its fangs. As far as the reptile community goes, they are not considered "Hots".

Hog nose snakes are commonly called in hiss adder and puff adder. They are a rear fanged snake that has a mild venom. Most people the bite will cause little more than some swelling and irritation. They are not of course the same snakes of the of Africa by the same common name.

All hognose snakes are mildly venemous. There venom in the wild is used for amphibians. Hognoses are rear fanged, so if they try to bite you sometimes you dont get hit with fangs. Now if you get bit, simply wash your hands. Like another user said, its like a bee sting. If your allergic to hognoses, you have to seek medical help as you would if allergic to bees. But hognoses are great pets, so dont let the word venom scare you.

Not many people know this but hognose's are poisonous. Their back fangs are venomous so they don't cause any harm to humans.

Their rear teeth can deliver a very mild venom. The venom is harmless to most people, so the Western Hognose Snake is still considered a non-venomous snake

Hog nosed snakes are not venomous but puff adders are.

If you have something that looks like this it is not venomous.

Besides puff adders live in africe. And if someone sold you a venomous snake they could get in a lot of trouble.
