I want to set up a fire belly newt tank using one of those plastic see through box things...i heard of and seen loads of people doing it and i thought well there big and cheap. is it ok to use them as a vivarium?

It sounds very much doable. I see no problem with that.
Firebellies need a land area to rest, as well as a generous swimming space... that's not very hard to create.
I must disagree with the person above who said that newts don't climb. My Chinese firebellies can climb very well, and do it all the time. So your tank does need a lid in my view. You'll need to make sure it's well ventilated. Maybe make a large hole in the lid and close it off with mosquito screen?

Yes , for some reason that is a very popular idea for mainly newts. Its not the most "attractive" home, but tanks get very expensive. Also newts have no intrest to climb and the containers can be easier to clean. However you can provide him the biggest, healthiest enclosure- it's your newt, just don't leave the lid on ; )
